Postnatal Physiotherapy

 

Congratulations on the birth of your wonderful bundle of joy and welcome to motherhood!


It is not uncommon to be left with symptoms postnatally or to have a new onset of
symptoms that you were not expecting. Some mothers may also be unsure how to
return to exercise safely or how to rehab a diastasis recti (abdominal separation).
Being a mummy myself I have learnt that caring for yourself is also caring for your
baby and I am very much here to support you to achieve your goals.


Symptoms you may experience can include:

  • Pelvic girdle pain or back pain
  • Wrist and hand pain, pins & needles in fingers
  • Urinary incontinence 
  • Faecal incontinence
  • Prolapse
  • Diastasis Recti 
  • C-section scar tissue issues
  • Pain with intercourse
  • Post 2nd and 3rd degree tear with bladder or bowel dysfunction or scar pain

Postnatal body check (includes assessment and treatment for):

  • Separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis or divarification of rectus
    abdominis) 
  • Perineal trauma from childbirth
  • Prolapse post childbirth
  • Postnatal pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Postnatal return to exercise
  • Advice and fitting of vaginal pessary options to support recovery of prolapse
    and return to exercise
  • Advice on stress urinary incontinence and options for intravaginal devices for
    safe return to exercise
     

Treatments may include:

  • Pilates based home exercise programmes
  • Pelvic floor muscle training
  • EMG Biofeedback and Electrical stimulation to enhance pelvic floor strengthening
  • Soft tissue massage for C-section scars
  • Pelvic floor muscle release techniques for overactivity of muscles and scar tissue
    pain
  • Advice and exercise on returning to exercise safely
  • Pilates home exercise programmes
  • Advice on vaginal dilators and desensitisation techniques  
  • Prescription service available
